Looking to buy socks that:

- fit large feet (my size is about 12 in women's),

- are appropriate for autumn boots in that they are high enough (but not necessarily knee high; mid-calf would be OK),

- are wide enough in the calf area so as not to leave marks and constrict blood flow in lower legs.

- ideally would be made form moisture-wicking material high tech material. But will consider cotton or wool as well as long as wool is not scratchy.

I know I have listed a lot of requirements but am hoping someone has a solution.

Merino wool is great, warm in winter, cool in summer, not scratchy at all. Unfortunately I’m in the U.K. so any specific brand I’d recommend would be expensive to ship to you.
Thanks for this!

Solmates maybe? They are stupidly expensive but they have every length and they are comfortable. Buy XL either men or women
Thanks for this!

I will search for Soulmates and in particular see if they offer Merino wool products

No Wikipedia article at the link. Did I miss something?

They do have merino bland ones. I haven’t tried them but I do like my other solmates ones. Comfy and whimsical. They have some sales now

I have looked them up. So cozy indeed! And then of course the ad for this company started flashing in my Facebook feed and comments below it. Some women in comments specifically give their calf circumference and ask if the socks would fit and the company gives recommended models. I will buy those.

Make sure you buy x large. My husband wears 10.5, which is not even a big size, but large size was a bit too tight
Thanks for this!

I will get quarter socks in XL from them. Thank you. On sale the prices are reasonable. And the designs, oh so fun!

Regarding their high cost: I air dry my socks so they last for years and years. They are not going to be expensive if I calculate price per wear.

Good point. I air dry solmates too because I am afraid they’ll lose the color. They are fun! I am wearing slouchy ones right now. They have them on sale now. Slouchy top is black but bottom is all mixed colors. They are called: Fusion slouch socks. One of the colors is on sale now

Hikers love smartwool and darn tough for moisture wicking and high quality (they do have socks not designed for hiking too). Not sure on sizing though. I’m a women’s 8 and a medium works well for me if that says anything.

It probably means I would be XL. I will try them. For now I have ordered Solmate but only in L. The model they suggested is not available in XL. I will send them back if they do not fit and then try Smartwool. My problem with some socks is that the tube on top is too narrow and leaves marks and is uncomfortable. I am not even sure why since my calves are not THAT wide. I mean, I have seen women with much wider calves.

The other great brand is Vero Monte. Sell on Amazon. Excellent. Very comfortable. Perfect socks. Two kinds. If you are interested, I’ll tell you what’s the difference. One set is thinner than the other but both are excellent.

I went on a sock shopping spree. I have the reverse problem with feet smaller than the typical men's medium. So I tend to buy woman's medium footwear, or size 8 to 8.5 wide, which fit perfectly.

As well, I had some pairs pf hiking socks that finally wore out. So, I finally found replacements at Karrimor in the UK.

They have Midweight Boot Sock. The Mens medium fits 7 - 11, which I believe will fit you, according to the women-to-men size chart:
Women's to Men's US Shoe Size Converter

They are mostly cotton, and have a cushy feel as if wearing towels on your soles.

I'm just not sure about how they'll be around the calf.

Let me wait for Solmates to arrive. BTW they are quite a bit cheaper on the website on sale than on Amazon. If they do not fit, I will send them back and come to ask you about Vero Monte.

Yes, but I forgot to add that if you're a serious hiker, you might find that they're a bit too cushy. They might make you feel a bit unstable.

I'm wearing them now and paying attention to the calf. As they do leave indentations in my (skinny-ish) calves, they might be uncomfortable for you unless you roll them way down, which I do in the summer.
